The Day Of The Lord – Eschatology in Quaker Perspective – Edited by Dean Freiday
This Faith and Life volume on eschatology is about the ultimate nature of the universe as it bears upon the questions of human and cosmic destiny, Eschatology may be an unfamiliar and forbidding word to many, so what precisely does it mean? The root meaning is reason or discourse about the eschaton, i.e, about “end time” and “last things”. It has to do with the Christian teaching about the future – a future that derives its meaning from the climax of history. It has to do with our theology of hope about the outer limits of human existence. It is concerned with a philosophy and interpretation of history with reference to the final events of the end time. Although the human mind and reason cannot really fathom the boundedness of human history and human existence, we at least know from experience that our powers of life are finite and that ultimately we must learn to come to terms with those limits. The very concept of eschatology may seem remote and of little concern to us, yet it is also very near to us and deeply rooted in our subconscious.
