‘Yan, Tan, Hethera’ (one, two, three) the Lakeland shepherd counts his flock. Yan is an orphan lamb, one of three brought in from the storm to be reared by Hannah in the farmhouse kitchen. Different from the start, she grows wilful and headstrong, impatient of the placid meadow flock ,restless for the freedom of the high fell.

The setting of the story is real. Fiona Satow writes out of long and close experience of England’s Lake District. She knows the fells at first hand in all weathers. She knows the shepherd and his sister. But this is not just a Lakeland tale. The wayward lamb has its human counterparts… This is what gives the story of Yan its special appeal.
